my buddy Shadow. Now, mind you, Shadow hadn't been out of his stall for 26 days and was pretty full of it to say the least. But we two have a special bond that probably only we can understand and I proceeded to go in his stall, put his halter on and we headed toward the round pen at a snail's pace. You have to remember that I was supposed to be on complete bed rest…big chuckle. Never mind that, I had to get my horse outside! Well it took us quite a while to get the 100 ft, with me hobbling carefully and Shadow literally prancing in his own tracks. I turned him loose and he sure exploded, ran, spinning, slid, bucked, everything he'd been needing to do so badly. By this time I figured if I could make it back to the house for a quick nap I'd be a lot better off so I started back on the long haul. I happened to turn around about the time I got close to the house and Shadow had stopped playing and picked up a lounge whip. He had the handle in his mouth and was rearing the spinning the whip around like a tassel dancer, then flipping it like he was skipping rope. I got to laughing so hard I had tears coming down my face. Then I went in the house and peeked out the window to see Shadow had stopped playing and was standing there with the whip in his mouth staring at the door where I had disappeared. So I went back out the door and Shadow started up his exhibition again! Our bond was even stronger than before and we have a trust that will never be broken.
Skips Copy K Shadow has been the center of my breeding program. His offspring have earned what no other Skipper-bred horse and few others have ever accomplished: 7 World Championships, 7 Reserve World Championships, numerous ROMs, Superiors, NSBA winners, and many Futurity Winners. These titles have been earned in many events, Western Riding, Trail, Team Penning, Pleasure, Barrels, Poles, Flags, Parade Horse and halter, as the Quarter Horse was originally bred to be, I firmly believe VERSATILITY is the name of the game: These babies are proving that not only are they pretty to look at, but they've got whatever it takes to be winners. This is the modern Skipper horse of today and what we are breeding to produce here at Lavender Farms. Shadow's daughters are a major part of the broodmare band along with many other line-bred Skipsters. When people come to visit or looking for stock they sometimes get so confused and complain that "they all look alike". "Well", I explain, "that is truly what line-breeding is-putting that stamp of type on our horses". The influence of some of the original foundation Skippers such as Nick W, Skipper W, Skipper's King, Skip's Reward, Skipster, Skipper Jr., and Skipper's Lad are producing modern useable and truly versatile horses to meet today's grueling demands.
So this is where we are today, raising what are very possibly the most pure line of Skipper/Skipster horses available left anywhere and for sure the largest group in any one operation. We have developed our own distinct line-bred stock using the same principles the legendary Hank Wiescamp did in his lifetime. Yet we feel we've done this without trying to copycat or imitate the same direction that the famous Wiescamp horses were going. We feel this is a compromise between the old foundation type and the more modern horses of today's market. |

We now have 70+ head of broodmares, stand eight breeding stallions, and have stock of all ages. There's lots of color, about 50% palominos, 10% buckskins, grays, bays, blacks and the balance are sorrel and chestnut. We have sold breeding and show stock all over the US and Internationally also. These horses we're breeding have good bone, great sloping shoulders, short backs, deep hips, strong stifles, long graceful pencilnecks, beautiful heads, large soft eyes (windows to the soul), good jaws, being so appealing and a pleasure to our eyes, yet having such super minds that it makes it pleasing to work around and be with them.
In life I believe each day is only what you make of it and each day may be our last, so why not be happy doing what you love the most…life and horses, it keeps us smiling…so long everybody and please feel welcome to visit us on our website to learn more details of our very own breeding program at www.skipperhorses.com if you can't make it to the farm. We'd love to hear from you by phone of email or to be able to shake your hand and say hello in person.
